I got the feeling halfway through the transfer window that we wouldn't sign anyone of note and the Czech saying as much, got me thinking then that I wouldn't be surprised if GSB said to Moyes that there is no money for signings due to COVID in January and they aren't putting anymore money in until the sell in a couple of years and the Czech won't put money in until he has bought the club in a couple of years, but they know many players (11 at last count I think) are out of contract in the summer and better players will need improved contracts, Bowen, Soucek, Johnson so there will have to be a decent transfer kitty and that the only way of funding all that is to sell Declan and use the money.

We've been sloppy in closing out games.

Could easily had a pont at Man United but sloppily gave away possession for their winner with the last kick.

As shit as we were against Newcastle we only had to go in winning at half time and sorted things out.
Again, didn't slow the game down, has chances to see the half out but were very naive.

Thought we had cleared all that rubbish up.
Very unprofessional.

I agree with most of the stuff here soucek and rice need to go back to last year positions. Play vlasic in the middle and let him build up some form… everyone benny/Lanzini/fornals are all bowing hot and cold might as well give him the chance to do something.

Last season Tommy played in no8 and Rice no6
This season having urged more from Rice, they are both no8’s
Problem being, like Gerrard and Lampard, it ain’t working
I would try a 4-4-1-1 with a diamond, so bring Kral at the base, where he plays, the two central where they can operate as 8’s and put Vlasic at the tip, no10, once again where the bloke plays
Then play Bowen and Antonio free to roam across the front line pulling wide to create space for the 8’s and Vlasic
Got to worth a spin but frog eyes is Alraldited to his 4-2-3-1 - so fuck all will change

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Newcastle - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Dreaming, I agree, what I was suggesting was a Plan B, a 433 or 451 whatever you want to call it. But yes I would drop Soucek, or at least rest him, but Moyes has backed himself into a corner with limited options. Try Vlasic as a Number 10 maybe as that's what most seem to think he is. Even stick him up front to give Antonio a rest. Moyes and the Club have brought in players Moyes either doesn't trust or they just haven't been as good as hoped. Vlasic and Kral to name but two. Then lack of form with Soucek, Benny, Fornals, Coufal (hernia apparently) has left him with a problem.

Play it as last year though with Rice deeper and Soucek doing what he does best. However I seem to remember it going a bit sour in December 20 and the signing of Lingard got us going again. If Rice is off then you can't pander to his requests to roam about and play further forward, if indeed he has requested it. Whatever the situation we all seem to agree that Soucek isn't a deep lying playmaker!

One of the worst games Ive been to this season.
It just goes to show that not upgrading and doing zero business in the transfer window is leading to our downfall.
We will be lucky to finish in the top 8.

Get Soucek back in his proper position. Drop Antonio. Play Vlasic centrelly. No more Fredericks or Yarmolenko.

Next game, these things please Moyes you non thinker

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Newcastle - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Zico, Moyes don't think that's an option either. But would you keep playing Soucek even if he was out of form, as he is now?

And you know, Soucek goal draught is partly because of Moyes unleashing Rice to roam where he'll he wants.

Rice should be sitting deeper, as Rodri does at ManC and Busquets does at Barca.

My point is you can't have two defensive midfielders as attacking midfielders, it doesn't add up even if they can add goals in set pieces and overload play. But that's tactics, not solely up to Soucek and Rice.
The team is eleven players not two

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Newcastle - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
I don't think anyone is suggesting that Soucek and Rice are used as attacking midfielders, but more of a box to box. They aren't going to play tippy tappy passes around the edge or the area, but who is right now?! Get them in or near the box and put crosses in. That's where Soucek's goals came from last year. I certainly don't think Vlasic is the answer.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Newcastle - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
You are just as naive as Moyes is.
You keep on raving about using soucek and Rice as attacking midfielders despite two significant facts.
Both players are not attacking midfielders, and will never ever be either.
Secondly, Moyes preferred and only formation is 4231. Will he ever change into your thoughts?
No he won't. Just look at yesterday's match. An deflated Soucek stayed on and an frustrated Benrahma went off. The most sensible sub would be Soucek off and Vlasic on.
But Moyes won't change his oreffered XI.
Suck on that.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Newcastle - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
I agree, especially with other teams working us out. The No10 area is crowded out. Neither Lanzini, Benny, Formals have had any luck there recently. It opens up more space for Bowen as well as the opposition DM's would be looking to stop Rice and Soucek. You can imagine our aerial threat with those two bombing in along with Antonio. If nothing else it will get us more corners. Something has to be looked at. Soucek was outplayed yesterday by a winger, turned striker now central midfielder!!

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Newcastle - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
I suggested a similar idea Zico but I was told that I was an idiot for wanting to bring in yet another CDM despite the fact I am convinced Rice would be even better playing further up the pitch.

I would play Kral.

Let Rice and Soucek play with a bit more freedom and bring Benrahma on when needed.

4-1-2-3

zico 4:45 Sun Feb 20
Re: ⚽ West Ham v Newcastle - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Those that suggest the change in roles re Rice/Soucek are an issue correct. Whilst Rice can bomb further forward Soucek " isn't" a defensive midfielder as he isn't a good enough passer of the ball so can't start attacks off. Where he was good was arriving late in the oppositions box and finishing attacks. He is also slow so is not the player you want chasing back when the ball is lost. There is a solution though and that would be a change of formation. The number 10 position is being crowded out by the opposition. Whoever plays there doesn't perform, so for me a 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 could be an option if Plan A isn't working. One sitting midfielder allowing Rice and Soucek to bomb on and join Bowen, Antonio and whoever is on the left. Problem is the only options for that role are either Noble or Kral. Maybe this was the thinking behind the failed bid for Kalvin Phillips.

All of that Meerkat and add also the selection of the hapless Fredericks I’ve Johnson who must start every time in his preferred position if Coufal is not available. These are not the decisions of a man who is 100% present on the job.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Newcastle - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
It certainly looks like that Pickle .
Seeing our supposed striker all over the pitch except where he should be , taking long throws , wild shots . It could be seen as wilful mismanagement.
But I think it’s been going on for a good while now . Primarily manifest in the licence Rice seems to have to roam all over the pitch .
He is our best player no doubt but he is being indulged by the manager .
Again yesterday he stood over a free kick on the sideline with Bowen I think . It was miles out , only real option was a delivery into the box yet he left it to Bowen and took himself down the line and out of the play .
Instead he should have been in the box waiting on the delivery . He is 6 ft plus after all .
And as the season goes on , has this indulgence of Rice benefited the team overall .
I would argue no . Soucek has been emasculated, his goals have dried up , remember he got 10 last season . Rice has 3 .
Remember the recent away game v Watford, Rice was suspended , Soucek played further forward , got a good goal in a comprehensive win .
I’m not having a go at Rice , he is developing , but the team is not other than Bowen . And that I think is a management issue .
